Take One Picture 2012

As a school we are keen to understand more about the area we live in.  We decided to spend half a term exploring a real ‘hidden treasure’ in Cambridge called Kettle’s Yard.

Kettle’s Yard is open to the public and is purely designed as a place to enjoy.  The original owner was a man called Jim.  He had a great interest in art, natural objects and religion.  He believed that a painting should not be enjoyed on its own or in an art gallery where you have to be quiet.  He thought that art should be carefully placed at different heights and surrounded by carefully chosen objects to create the right mood and atmosphere, being careful to make sure that the light was right as well.

Jim’s house is amazing!  There is so much in there to enjoy that we decided to focus on one room.  Jim’s bedroom.  This room really shows how he used colour and careful placing of objects to show things at their best.  He even put some paintings at floor level so if you are sitting down there are beautiful things to look at.

We had a special assembly

to introduce Jim’s bedroom to the school.  Lots of members of staff collected objects that Jim has and made the bedroom up in front of the school.

Everyone from Reception through to Year 6 is visiting Kettle’s Yard and Jim’s bedroom.  The very nice staff there are leading workshops to help us with our learning.

On Thursday 9th February in the afternoon we are turning the whole school into an exhibition.  You are very welcome to come and see our learning and work all laid out for you to enjoy.
